My Geek Moment for the Year

I was at the Wootini Gallery Holiday Show opening on Friday night and was doing a healthy combination of working and schmoozing. I was talking with one of the artists, David Lanham (@dlanham), an artist I had actually interviewed a couple weeks ago. As we got to talking he showed me his newest work… and I geeked out.
David is the designer and mastermind behind OLLIE the Twitterrific bird/mascot. He works for Iconfactory in Greensboro, NC and they have developed a vinyl figure of Ollie. Ollie hasn’t been released yet, but he will be soon. I’m going to try and get some and hook you guys up. Because Ollie is SAWEEET. He was even featured as a great holiday gift for techies on @Mashable!
Admittedly, getting so excited about meeting David and seeing Ollie in person was TOTALLY my geek moment of the week… and maybe the year. But I’m not ashamed. It is totally fine to have those little things you geek out over. Right?! Right.
I want to know: What do YOU geek out over? It can be totally silly or totally serious. I don’t judge.

Hm… I guess I’m having a little problem figuring out exactly what it means to “geek out”. Originally, a geek was the person in a circus sideshow or carnival midway who would do something really disgusting for shock value and freak-show delight. The classic was the geek who would bite the head off of a live chicken – Performance Art meets Roger Corman. Of course, they would do lots of other revolting things too, I don’t want to minimize their oeuvre. The geek was usually an alcoholic, drug addict and/or mentally ill person who was essentially homeless and willing to do anything for his next fix… and sometimes just for the sheer “fuck you” comment to society. This makes me wonder what exactly you did to that cute rubber bird after the picture was taken and how are you feeling now?
I see in an online dictionary that the first definition for “geek” is: “A person regarded as foolish, inept, or clumsy”. If so, then it’s tough for me to narrow down what I “geek out” over – so many choices, so little time.
The second definition is “A person who is single-minded or accomplished in scientific or technical pursuits but is felt to be socially inept.” In which case, to “geek out” over something must mean to be single-minded to the point of boring everybody in your social circle.
WAIT A MINUTE!! I think I just geeked out over the term “geek out”!This has been your Sunday morning Meta-moment.

@Michael – I think you just blew my mind. I knew I could count on you to provide me with totally necessary knowledge. This is why you are awesome. But that is definitely really interesting to see the transition of the word GEEK as we know it. AHHH so many geek moments.

My geekiest/funniest moment of the year involved you! At the Capstrat SMC meeting. We had connected via Twitter, but I was still clueless as to who this other Buckley was.
