My apologies for just telling you guys that I accepted a new job and then never updating you again after that.

Well, I’m now on my second week here at rAVe [pubs] and I love it! Everyone keeps asking, “So? How’s the new job? What are you doing? Do you like it?” etc. etc.

It’s great, I really like it so far, and I’m still figuring it all out. I feel a little bit like an infant. Yes, like the baby kind. You know, in that I’m new to this world, but like, I have a small sense of how to navigate my way around, I’m just learning how to speak the language and walk in such a way that I don’t bump into things.

Side note: Don’t you love how like little kids and toddlers who are just learning to walk are like drunk people? They just sort of aimlessly walk around and bump into things. Hilarious. Cracks me up every time. Toddlers and babies that is, not drunk people.

Back on track.

I also just wanted to give you guys a quick update and let you know that you can also follow my many musings on the rAVe [pubs] blog. Yes! I have a blog there, too. I’m writing about the AV industry, my experiences here at the company, and well, just my every day thoughts in general about, well, every day things.

Just thought I’d let you know.

Back to work.

All for now and much love.

There’s never usually an easy way to do this, and I guessed a 140 character tweet or Facebook status wouldn’t really do it justice or explain the situation, so I figured writing a quick blog post about it would be easiest.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT: I have accepted a position as the Director of Marketing and Business Development for rAVe Publications here in Chapel Hill, NC. I start October 1st.

For those of you who know my current role as Duchess of Digital Media for 1360 WCHL and Chapelboro.com, you’re probably
wondering what I’m thinking.

First and foremost, the past two years at WCHL have been incredible – I have learned more than I could have ever possibly thought to learn, I’ve grown to LOVE this community and all that it has to offer, I’ve made amazing friends, (I met my future husband!), and I’ve grown by leaps and bounds both personally and professionally. I’ve made mistakes. I’ve had successes. It’s time for a new adventure. Making the decision to leave WCHL was definitely not an easy one – but there are times when taking a risk and stepping outside of our comfort zone towards a new opportunity and venture can be rewarding beyond belief.

It’s not like I was out there actively searching for a job, but the opportunity at rAVe came about, and I knew that this was an offer that doesn’t come around often. It’s a HUGE professional growth opportunity for me and I couldn’t be more excited for what lies ahead.

About rAVe Publications: (From rAVEpubs.com) rAVe [Publications], founded in 1998 by Gary Kayye, is a news organization that provides coverage of the commercial (ProAV) and residential (HomeAV) audiovisual trade industries via e-newsletters, blogs, video, social media, and a variety of other mediums.

The target audience for rAVe’s publications is what we call “AV Insiders” – AV dealers, integrators, consultants, designers, etc. that deal in the sale, specification, design and installation of audiovisual products. We do not target what most people call “end users,” though a small percentage of rAVe’s readers may qualify as such, especially on the ProAV side of things.

rAVe is an opinionated news organization, providing news and commentary that reflect the opinions of its authors. We believe that all news is heavily affected by the views of its author, so we state up front that ours is going to be. We are also heavily biased towards the AV integrator/dealer’s perspective since, well, that’s our audience. However, we do NOT get paid by manufacturers, or anyone, for running off our editorial mouth. We run what we run based on what we think, and that’s it.

My position at rAVe will evolve over time, but to begin with, I will be in charge of expanding the marketing efforts of the company along with identifying areas in which the company can grow and diversify itself. This is an opportunity where I can be creative and continue to hone my professional skills.

I am beyond grateful for the time I have had at WCHL and this opportunity would not have happened if it weren’t for my experience and the fact that the staff believed in me enough to let me screw stuff up sometimes and figure other stuff out on my own. I will continue in a contract role at WCHL over the next few months helping cover some events and train the person who will fill my position. And don’t worry – I’m not going anywhere, you’ll still hear from me, fo’sho’.

Thank you guys for all your support!

BTW: Here’s the job description for my current job. So, if you know of anyone who might be interested, send it to them!

Digital Media Guru – Chapelboro.com / 1360 WCHL

Overview

First and foremost, our Digital Media Guru will be a dynamic, passionate and really cool person who will lead the way as the company evolves to a true multi-platform content and advertiser-solution driven business.

The Digital Media Guru (DMG) will manage our day-to-day digital media operations. Currently this is primarily for the website and its related products (i.e. social media platforms, apps, newsletters). The Guru will also be a key player in future expansion to other platforms and products.

This oversight will include producing, contributing and facilitating all technology and content across our digital platforms (others may have primary responsibility for certain areas, i.e. news, ad serving).

The DMG will also directly manage the Digital Media Dynamo (plus future additional staff) and indirect management of those responsible for contributing to the success of the digital media platforms.

The DMG will manage day-to-day relationships with outside vendors (i.e. CMS provider, database management).

This is a hands-on job with hours that will vary week to week based on the needs of the organization. Flexibility is key.

The Digital Media Guru will report to the CEO and Managing Partner and be a member of the Senior Management Team which is responsible for guiding the business strategically, operationally and leading by example.

Qualities

First and foremost, fun! You’re fun, you get fun and can translate fun to others on the web, social media platforms, etc. This doesn’t mean every day is a party; it means you delight in connecting with people and your community.

Love community! We’re all about our community. The community we serve. Being a part of community. Bringing community together.

Team Driven! You’ll be joining a team that is enthusiastic, personality driven and creative… and more than anything… has each other’s backs.

Vision! The digital content world is ever-evolving and we’re looking for someone who can not only keep up with how people are consuming content but apply foresight to what may be coming next.

Dynamic! You light up a room when you enter. You love the people you meet through this job and they love you and what you have to say.

Passion! For what you do and how you do it. And you’ll be vocal about it.

Here’s another way to put it: you work and lead as part of a team with your positive, can-do attitude. You understand a senior position at a small and growing business means you need to be willing to step in and work where and as needed. You earn respect through your actions and your commitment and you respect those around you who do the same.

Skills

You get it! Full knowledge, understanding and practical experience with distributing a brand and its content via the web, blogs, Facebook, Twitter and the zillions of other ways people are and WILL consume and share content.

A bit of tech-y! Ability to use the various platforms to their maximum potential by understanding the full in’s and out’s of how they work technically. You should be comfortable in using a CMS, laying out web pages, understanding of basic code and programming and experience in how to make the web, social media platforms and other tools/platforms sing.

A great juggler! Lots of balls to keep in the air all the time requiring skillful organization ability, prioritization, anticipation of needs, etc (and an extra eye in the back of your head doesn’t hurt!). Be nimble!

Community knowledge and commitment! Commitment to and knowledge of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro-Orange County community, relationships with local community groups and the individuals who make our home town special and an understanding of the unique role Chapelboro.com and 1360 WCHL play in the community.

Digital media know-how! Experience writing for the web, blogs, social media, etc. Photography skills (shooting, editing, etc) and ideally knowledge of the video world.

Entrepreneurial Spirit! A results-oriented drive to build and grow our business as well as developing new business. That drive should be bathed in creativity that you will use to customize solutions for our customers.

And the usual “skill” stuff!

Highly Organized

Detail Oriented

Hands-On

Ability to Teach and Coach

Able to Multi-Task & Prioritize

Outstanding communication skills

Technical Understanding of Systems and Equipment (in-house, mobile and remote)

Knowledge of Adobe Audition or Cool Edit pro is a plus

Outstanding Production Skills

Adherence to Format and Guidelines

And, of course, basic computer skills in Word, Excel and PowerPoint (in addition to all of the digital media stuff above).

A Final Thought

The job outlined above will evolve and morph over time. The person in the position will help discover and guide what works, what doesn’t, what needs to get done, what we want to get done.

This means we not only need a dynamic, passionate and together person… but someone with a pioneering spirit and an entrepreneurial soul.

Is this the Professional Opportunity for You?

If you see yourself as a great fit for us… tell us why by sending your cover letter and resume to Christy Dixon at cdixon@1360wchl.com or WCHL, 88 VilCom Circle, Suite 130, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. No calls please. Relocation is not available.

1360 WCHL, an equal opportunity employer, is dedicated to providing broad outreach regarding job vacancies at the station. We seek the help of local organizations in referring qualified applicants to our station. Organizations that wish to receive our vacancy information should contact Christy Dixon at 1360 WCHL by calling 919-240-6027.

All for now and much love.

Once again, I’ve fallen off the updating wagon. Ah, whatever. Who cares?

It’s been a month and a half since my last update. I swear, I’m not some recovering blogger or something… but the past few months have been nuts, and the past month and a half, ah, well, two months, has been even more nuts.

We finally launched Chapelboro.com. I quite literally feel like I birthed an interactive-internet-local-media-website infant baby. Although I have not given actual birth yet, from what I hear, it’s strenuous and painful. You bleed, sweat, and cry a lot. But in the end, you bring something into the world that you are proud of. And those feelings (including the blood, sweat, and OH THE TEARS), are the feelings I’ve had working on this website.

It sounds trivial, but it couldn’t be more true.

I don’t usually like to use the term “proud” because overly prideful people can sometimes be ugly people. Humility is so important. But I am dadblamed proud of that website and what it not only means for the community of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, but what it means to me, personally. It’s almost symbolic of my journey over the last two years that I’ve lived in North Carolina.

When I first started working at 1360 WCHL (Chapel Hill-Carrboro’s News Talk and Tar Heels Station), I had three other jobs. I was working part-time for the radio station and part-time for three other businesses. I was dying in a lot of ways. I worked my tail off. But I took the job at WCHL with the mindset of, work your tail off and show them why they need to hire you full-time.

So, I worked my tail off. I worked WAY more hours than I was actually paid for and I took the job and made it my own. And in a matter of a little over two and a half months, my boss approached me and offered me a full-time job working for the station. I could finally quit my other jobs.

So, I took the full-time job. The salary wasn’t great, it was going to be tough to make ends meet and I wasn’t going to be eating out or vacationing much, but I had great benefits, a great opportunity, and a full-time job. I took that job with the mindset of, work my tail off and show them why they need to give me a raise and/or promote me.

So, I worked my tail off. I worked WAY too many hours. I learned how to do things outside of my actual job description. And I gained a ton of invaluable knowledge and experience. And, 7 months later, I got a promotion. I was promoted to “Duchess of Digital Media” (best job title EVAR) and I was going to be in charge of the launch of Chapelboro.com. The website had been over a year in the making. I sat in on preliminary meetings, consulted on names, logos, taglines, designs, colors, content. You name it.

I have never worked so hard on anything in my entire life. And I’ve worked hard on a lot of things. But I am really proud of what came out. Sure, there’s still some kinks to work out with it. Okay, a lot of kinks. But hey, it’s the nature of the beast.

Again, I don’t write all of this to sound bragadocious (sweet word) or prideful. I write it to share that you can do anything. With the right mindset and the right work ethic, you can do anything.

I’ve learned so much in the past year and a half and I know I have so much more to learn. I am not where I want to be… yet. But now I have the mindset of, work my tail off, learn a lot, and change the world and stuff like that.

I am so blessed and so incredibly grateful. I can’t thank God, my family, and my friends enough for the support I’ve had throughout the last year, two years, seven years, my entire life. When life smacks me in the face, life backhands itself right back and shows me how lucky I am. (Does that even make sense? It does to me.)

I’m tired. I’ve had one day off in two+ months. But I am okay. I’m like my own proverbial Thomas the Tank Engine.

Also, I get to see my best friend, Bec, this weekend. So I have that to look forward to.

And, of course, as my mother used to say, “This, too, shall pass.”

I apologize if this post made absolutely no sense whatsoever. But I miss writing. And I felt like putting my stream of consciousness down on paper.

Also, on another note, I’ve lost 20 pounds so far. BOOM BROADS!

And, yet, another note… I’ve raised half the money I need for my mission trip to Kenya!! Wahoo!!

And now a message from an old guy:

Now if you are going to win any battle you have to do one thing. You have to make the mind run the body. Never let the body tell the mind what to do. The body will always give up. It is always tired in the morning, noon, and night. But the body is never tired if the mind is not tired.”

-General George S. Patton, U.S. Army and 1912 Olympian

Dang. I didn’t realize the words of an old (deceased) Army General would ever make so much sense to me. The body always gives up – for me. Trust me, my body would always rather stay on the couch, or in bed. My body never wants to get up earlier than it has to. My mind does the grunt work. My body is just the carrier pigeon.

Was feeling a small sense of personal defeat on Friday – and was feeling a general sense of being overwhelmed. (It happens. Right? Right.) And, in the midst of doing work, stumbled across this quote. I think I’m going to print off 100 copies of it and tape it up everywhere I need a reminder.

Sometimes the mind just needs a reminder – because the body tends to forget.

Word.

PS: I think Betty White is a rockstar in both body and mind. She was effing brilliant on SNL last night. For reals.

We all work.

Although “work” isn’t so easily defined for all of us. For some of us, “work” is what pays the bills. Going to the gym is “working” out. To others, volunteering is “work.” It’s all work – in some way or another.

Sure, we all “work” for someone. Unless you are one of the lucky people who have no one to answer to but yourself, either because you’re a loner or because you’re a billionaire, you “work” for someone.

But my question to you goes deeper than a boss / authority figure: WHO do YOU work for?

You don’t make money for your boss, you make money for yourself or a family you’re supporting. But in the end, are you happy with the “work” you’re doing? Are you really working for the money, are you working for the boss, are you working for your family, or are you working for yourself? Is the paycheck the most important thing?

The reason I pose this question is because it is a question that I, myself, have posed a lot recently… to, well, myself. I don’t make a lot of money and I work a lot. But what is my end goal? Do I have a plan? Do I have a vision? The things that I do outside of my 9-5 job, are all those activities (other involvement) considered, work? Do I see the hard “work” I put into those things as valuable? Of course. Because I don’t get paid to run. I don’t get paid to do improv. I do those things for myself.

Even if you spend 80 hours a week at the office, or you work 100 hours a week at 3 jobs, or you are lucky and you have a very strict 9-5, 40 hour a week gig, it’s important to take a step back from the daily grind and remember who you work for FIRST.

Who’s your number one boss? You. YOU are you’re number one boss. You know when you’re procrastinating, working diligently, improving, accomplishing, goal setting, yada yada yada. You know YOU better than anyone… which that should go without saying.

I know I need a reminder every once in a while. So, I thought, maybe if I wrote it down and reminded myself, in turn, I’d help to remind other people. You work for yourself first, because if you’re your own number one employee, it will show in everything else you do.

I work really hard. Always have.

That medal was my running paycheck. I earned it.

But particularly, I’ve worked really hard for six months on a “side-project”, and this past Sunday was my mid-year evaluation. I ran my first ever half-marathon. 13.1 miles. The Long Branch, New Jersey half-marathon. And the only one boss that could judge my performance? Me.

It was, by far, the most difficult thing I have ever done. Not only was it 13.1 miles, but it was 93 degrees, no shade, no breeze (for at least 10.5 of the 13.1 miles), high pollen count, etc. etc… By mile 2 I wanted to quit – and I knew I had a long way to go.

My goal was a finishing time of 2 hours and 30 minutes. I ended up finishing in 2 hours and 56 minutes. Was I disappointed?Sure. But was I proud of myself? Absolutely. For the last six months I have trained and prepared 100% on my own. No one else made me get up in the morning and run 5 miles, no one else told me I had to run after working at 15 hour day… I told myself. I did the work.

My friend Colette and my friend Greg were my mentors – talking me through the bad runs, the good runs, and the prep. But in the end, my legs did the running.

And yeah, I’ll admit it, mile 9 of 13.1, I cried. Straight up. No lies. I didn’t know if I could finish or not. As I watched people passing out beside me, and people throwing up from heat exhaustion, I had to have the conversation with myself, did I want to pass out or did I want to finish? I chose the later.

In running, in comedy, in life, I am my own boss. If I am proud of the work I do, the people I literally work for will feel the same way.

Who do YOU work for?

Word.

Maybe this is just my pet-peeve, maybe I’m a bit cynical (who isn’t?), or maybe I’m just cranky and need a burrito. But if I read one more “Predictions for 2010″ blog entry, I think I might have to punch my computer.

Unless you're this lady, stop telling me what WILL happen.

And my computer doesn’t deserve that, she’s been nothing but loyal to me.

But seriously, stop making predictions and start DOING. Stop telling me what you THINK will happen and take the steps, do the work, and take the actions that are necessary to actually MAKE things happen the way you want them to. Don’t let “the man” do the dirty work for you.

That’s what I’m doing.

Do you think I am working four jobs right now because I predict I will be worn out in 2010? Or predict I will be broke? No. I am working four jobs right now and #hustling like whoa so that I can get over this hump, make a real connection, and be a rockstar in 2010.

Now, because I’m awesome and I like to contradict myself a little bit sometimes, I will say that I understand the intent of or purpose behind predictions. We can all see what is coming… in a sense – I think we all have a bit of clairvoyancy (is that a word?). I think it stems from our innate ability to have a vision for the future… and for all of those Nostradamus specials on the History channel.

(In my humble opinion, there’s a difference between having vision and being a “predictor.”)

But seriously, I don’t want to hear ANY MORE 2010 predictions. If so, I predict that I’ll open up a nice can of whoop ass on you.

(Ps: I am just joking about the can of whoop ass. I do not promote violence in any way. I hope that for those of you that are not aware of my sometimes sarcastic tone, that you can take my words for what they are. Just words.)

What do you think? Do you think predictions are valid or just lip service? Prove me wrong. I love being proven wrong.

Word.

No two people are exactly the same. (Except for maybe the Olsen twins. They are eerily similar). There are different styles of writers, bloggers, marketers, advertisers, teachers, bosses, CEO’s, standup comedians, and improvisers.

Sure, to someone who isn’t familiar with the church of Improvisation, it might seem like improv is all the same. It’s a bunch of people on a stage getting strange suggestions and hamming it up to an audience. I assure you, this is not the case… most of the time. Styles of improv even vary from city to city and theater to theater. One theater might support an “organic” style of improv where you start slow and gradually find the crux of the scene, or figure out what the scene is out. Whereas another theater might be all about playing the game of improv – fast-paced, quick edits, an absurd world. and big bold characters. The latter is my world. And I love it. I’ve only been doing improv for a little over three years, but I know what is fun for me and what gets my adrenaline pumping. And that is no nonsense, take-your-breath-away improv. But each style is tied together with a few (or single) philosophical or abstract threads – make people laugh… now.

Similarly, in the world of marketing and media, there are completely different styles of how people want to connect and engage with their audience. Some companies are going to be way more in your face with product placement or “YOU MUST BUY/ACT NOW” deals. Others are going to use more passive marketing techniques – warming you up with nice words and pretty images, and THEN proposing their deal. And again, each style is tied together with a single (or few) similar philosophical threads – make money… now.

Whether we are talking about the world of improvisation or the world of marketing, the truth is, the big, bold choices tend to be more successful than the passive, laissez-faire, approaches. If I want into an improv scene hesitant, coy, and non-chalant, the audience is going to not trust me and check-out pretty quickly. But if I walk into that scene playing to the top of my intelligence, making a bold, strong choice, the audience is immediately going to be engaged with everything that I am doing.

If you try to market your brand, your idea, or your business by just resting on your laurels, you are bound to fail… eventually. But if you make a strong, bold, choice – differentiating your brand within your niche, making it stand out, and engaging with your audience, you have immediately set yourself up to succeed.

When I perform, I want to make people laugh. I’m not going to do that by just standing off to the side letting things “happen.” I make them happen. I play the game. I go in strong.

When you own a business or you are promoting a brand, ultimately it’s about money and recognition. Make things happen. Play the game. Go in strong.

Question: What experiences have YOU had with a successful brand? How were they successful? How did they engage you? How did they stand out? Do you agree or disagree with my thoughts?

No, you’re booty doesn’t look good in that video. No, your friend did NOT find your pictures from high school. And if they did, they wouldn’t just DM you a creepy link. These are what is known as PHISHING scams. No, not ploys to get you to listen to old Phish albums. Phishing scams are defined as (via Wikipedia):

In the field of computer security, phishing is the criminally fraudulent process of attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card details by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in an electronic communication. Communications purporting to be from popular social web sites, auction sites, online payment processors or IT administrators are commonly used to lure the unsuspecting public. Phishing is typically carried out by e-mail or instant messaging,[1] and it often directs users to enter details at a fake website whose look and feel are almost identical to the legitimate one.

Essentially, when you click that link that you SHOULD NOT CLICK, a tiny virus gets into your computer system and spreads that virus to all of your contacts (or sends a similar link out to people in your network hoping THEY, too, will click the link). And so on and so forth. That virus can steal ALL of your vital information, logins, usernames, passwords, and even credit card and personal information (like addresses, etc.)

Also, if you get an email or a direct message that asks you to change you password, put in your information, or update something, DON’T DO IT through that link. Some links sent to us look VERY real using real graphics, correct information, etc.

The FIRST thing you should do is manually access the website in question – meaning, click out of whatever window you are in, shut down your browser all the way, open up a new browser window, then type in the web address manually. Once you have accessed the site in question, if you REALLY do need to change something, it should say it when you login legitimately.

Also, the FTC has a great site on ways to protect yourself from confusing phishing scams.

So, EVEN IF you trust the person who has sent you the link, double check with them to make sure it is legit. I question my friends all the time just to be sure.

But seriously, stop clicking that link that says, “ROFL, is this you?! [insert spammy link here].” OF COURSE IT IS NOT YOU. Seriously, people? Who is clicking these links.

So, for the sake of all of us. Stop clicking that phishing link. You know the one I’m talking about.

Question: What examples have YOU seen of “good” phishing scams? And by “good,” I mean, they seem legitimate, but end up getting you. Why do YOU think people are clicking the links? What’s your opinion?

Word.

Most of you know by now that in addition to being extremely passionate about writing and social media, I am a comedian. I have always loved comedy. I can remember as a kid staying awake way past my bedtime, just so I could watch Saturday Night Live. I would watch old clips of Gilda Radner and Jane Curtin and think to myself, “Wow, I want to do that.”

I'll admit it. I'm a ham.

Comedy has influenced my entire life.

One of my earliest memories that I have is: I was two years old, sitting at my kitchen table eating dry cheerios and I stopped to look around. My mom said to me, “Honey what’s wrong?” I said, “Mom, where are the cameras?” This was a completely honest and heartfelt question. I honestly believed that my life was like an episode of The Truman Show (Even though that movie hadn’t even been made yet, that’s what I thought my life was. I thought I was on T.V. and on stage all the time).

I began acting in elementary school, and always played the comic relief. I started writing sketches and bits and putting on little plays for my parents or my friends. When I was in drama in middle and high school, I would always write a sort of “sketch revue” and try to have one of my sketches featured at an assembly or something like that. I performed all the time.

Then it came time to choose a college. I had been offered golf scholarships to a couple of large division-1 schools. [CONFESSION: Yes, I have played golf my entire life. Yes, I was the only girl on the golf team for a long time. No, I am not a loser. No, I am not better than Michelle Wie.] Well, I knew that golf wasn’t my true passion… comedy was (is). I went to visit Christopher Newport University and I heard they had a sketch comedy troupe. I went to see a show and fell in love. I was not going to go to another school. I WAS going to go to CNU and join CNU TONiGHT and be a writer and performer and be awesome. And I did.

Then in college, I took my first class in improvisation at the Upright Citizen’s Brigade Theater in New York City, NY. I got bit by the improv bug. The feeling of ultimate positivity, being totally in the moment, and completely without a script was the most freeing thing I have ever done – and I have never looked back. I even moved to North Carolina to take classes at the DSI Comedy Theater. Improv is addictive.

I share this with you because of all these experiences (and the ones I have yet to experience) have helped to shape who I am and shape my perspective. Maybe it will help you understand me more. Maybe it’s just a good story. Maybe this is a waste of your time. Who knows?

But as I have come to love comedy and love writing and LOVE improvisation, I have come to totally and utterly admire these two women: Tina Fey and Rachel Dratch. They are incredible writers, incredible performers, and incredible women. They have truly influenced the entire industry to prove that YES, women ARE funny.

[I also totally love and admire Amy Poehler, but she isn't in this video. But it's okay. SIDE NOTE: I met Amy Poehler the summer after I graduated from college when I was taking comedy classes in NYC (PICTURE PROOF HERE). I think I was able to say a total of ten words to her. I totally froze. I suck.]

I haven’t seen this video in a long time! This is an awesome clip from an ABC news interview with Tina and Rachel from A LONG time ago. In the interview, they talk about their hilarious two-woman sketch show “Dratch & Fey.” Thanks @callmeKP for the link. They also talk about the stigma that comes with being a woman in comedy and how they have worked to combat that stigma. If you can’t see the video, click here. We can learn a lot from these women, no matter what field of “expertise” we are in.

QUESTION: Do you think that the battle that many women have had to face in comedy is similar to a battle women have had to face in business? Do you think the “male-dominated comedy business” and “male-dominated business-business” are changing? What progress have we made? Women in the United States STILL only make 78 cents to every man’s dollar for the same position and same work. I want to hear your thoughts.

Word.

I have been asked this question a lot recently.

I've got an idea!

“What do you do when you run out of ideas? How do you keep generating new ideas or new content when you feel like you’ve exhausted everything?”

Maybe it’s because the holiday’s are afoot and people’s minds are stretched thin? I don’t know. Maybe we are, after a gazillion years, just starting to run out of ideas. Well, don’t fret, we are never going to run out of ideas. Now, let me say this, at this point, it is very hard to reinvent the wheel – no one is going to come up with a new invention of the wheel. BUT, we can come up with new ways to make the “wheel” better or whathaveyou. The “wheel” in this case, is a metaphor.

Okay, so you are a creative, or a writer, or a business owner, or a student, or a person and you have to generate “ideas” for things – but after awhile, you have trouble coming up with new ideas. Suddenly, idea generation is not your best friend. Being an improviser, I am trained to think on my feet and take one suggestion to inspire an entire show and an entire set of ideas. I then use ideas to inspire new ideas. So, here are a few things that I, personally, do to help when I am starting to run out of ideas.

1. Lists of TEN (or more)

If you’re writing something (i.e. a blog post, new marketing material, story, etc.) start with a category – then write down IN RAPID FIRE the first TEN (or more) things that come to mind that fall under that category – the first five will be easy, the last five will be harder.
If you find yourself at ten and you can keep going, then by all means, KEEP GOING. Stop when you stop.
For example – if I were writing a blog post about MUSIC I would come up with the first ten things that came to mind:

1. Michael Jackson
2. Songwriters –> singers
3. My favorite band
4. My favorite song
5. Why I wish I knew how to play guitar
6. My favorite song to sing
7. My karaoke song of choice
8. Why I hate karaoke
9. Why I love karaoke
1o. Why are people obsessed with karaoke?

…and so on.

WHY DO THIS? I’m no brain scientist, but our brain associates different ideas with different categories. By spitting out whatever comes to mind, you will be able to cross off ideas that are no good and focus on the ones that are awesome. Most likely, at least eight of the ten ideas you come up with are going to be bogus or bad ideas. You then have two AWESOME ideas to choose from. Makes sense, right? I sometimes makes rapid fire lists a couple times a day. It never hurts to generate information right away in order to be able to weed it out later.

2. The Free-Association Game

Start with ONE word – any word that may fall into a category that you are interested in writing or talking about etc… (whatever project you are working on, large or small). Then free-associate from that word. Go out as far as you can away from that word, but then try to make the conscious effort to COME BACK to the word, having gone full circle. (This is a big-time improv exercise and warm-up. In fact, some improv groups open their entire improv SHOW with this exercise. It’s a huge idea generator.)

For example, I will do a free-association with the word(s) ICE CREAM -

Ice Cream –> Cold –> Snow –> Nicknames for Dandruff –> Head & Shoulders –> Body Parts –> Big Toe –> Tow Truck –> Large Fines –> Hefty Fee –> Hefty Trash bags –> Odorless –> What’s that smell? –> Mmm chocolate –> ICE CREAM!

See what I did there? I started at ice cream and then just wrote down the next thing that came to mind, and free associated off the previous word, and eventually, I made my way back to ice cream. Damn. Now I want ice cream.

WHY DO THIS? Sure, free-associating off the word ice cream may seem silly, but we were able to see what one word can lead to. No idea in this exercise is stupid. Start with one thing and you are able to give yourself A LOT of ideas. Ideas = gifts to yourself. Awesome.

3. Get Random

Sometimes you don’t want to write or work in your niche area. You want to STEP OUT and try something different. Try something new. Get to know a different side, a different angle, a different approach. Well, then get random. What do I mean? Well, the interwebs are FULL of AWESOME random “thing” generators that can become your best friend.

1. Wikipedia RANDOM ARTICLE generator. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/special:Random / if the link doesn’t work). This will take you, quite literally, to a RANDOM article on Wikipedia. Find a random article, read about it, see what ideas come to you when you learn something you perhaps didn’t know before. Education can be the best idea generator.
2. Flickr INTERESTINGNESS. Flickr is an AMAZING network of photographs. Flickr created INTERESTINGNESS, which compiles new photos that have interesting tags, great comments, or a ton of views. But guaranteed, these photos are interesting. This links to the INTERESTING photos from the last 7 days. Check out the new photos – are there any that catch your eye? Any that seem to inspire you? Use the photos for inspiration and ingenious idea generation.
3. Google Wonder Wheel. I discovered the Google Wonder Wheel a while ago and I immediately fell in LOVE. When you do a Google search, click on the little “show options” button. Look about 3/4 of the way down on the left, and you will see the WONDER WHEEL link. The wonder wheel does a cloud of information and links that connect to whatever you are looking for. It is amazing. (I could talk about the Wonder Wheel all day… but I won’t do that here. Maybe I’ll write a whole blog post about the Wonder Wheel… ahh! Look! An IDEA!)
4. Love the words of Famous people. Find a random famous quote. Read it. What does it make you think of? Use it as a jumping off point to a new thought or new idea. Write YOUR OWN quote. Words are extremely powerful and have a huge effect on our imaginations.

WHY DO THIS? Stepping outside of our comfort zone and exploring something that is different, and literally, RANDOM, is fuel for idea generation. We tend to get stuck in a rut when we write or work on the same thing every day. Try something different. I guarantee you will surprise even yourself.

—————

I hope that my crazy brain and my crazy ideas have helped you a little bit.

Tell me: Have you ever tried any of the things that I do? Do you have any techniques of your own? Leave a comment with some of the things YOU like to when writer’s blog hits and when you have simply run out of ideas.
