Something that has long been debated in the “fashion” world – or I guess I should really say the general world – is “What is, ultimately, more important? Style or comfort?

Now, the truth is, this answer is going to be different for pretty much everyone. Some women will say STYLE and say that till they are blue in the face, while others will defend COMFORT till they’re blue in their Danskins.

It’s one of those “issues” that clearly is a non-essential issue, but still one that is interesting to be discussed or debated.

Me? Honestly? I tend to stand on the side of COMFORT. Sure, I have a few dresses that I absolutely LOVE that I can’t for the life of me breathe in or sit comfortably in. Sure, I have a few pair of stilettos that are comfortable for about the first 0.8 seconds and then I want to cut my feet off because cutting my feet off would be less painful than the pain I experience in those shoes. Sure, I have a few pair of earrings that are HUGE and hurt my ears after wearing them for longer than 15 minutes.

But, I would say, unless it is some super special occasion where the STYLE option really outweighs the COMFORTABLE option, I’m pretty much going to choose the latter every time. But, I will say, that I try very, very hard not to sacrifice style for comfort. But, that’s not to say that I haven’t before, because I certainly have.

Thankfully, this outfit fits, in my humble opinion, into BOTH categories – comfort AND style. Or style AND comfort. But that’s neither here nor there. The crazy comfortable striped maxi skirt, the comfortable tank top, the closet staple jean jacket, and my favorite Rainbow flip-flops – with their powers combined – they produce a comfortably stylish outfit. No?

Seriously though, those pieces that you come across that fit into both categories are, in my humble opinion, what you call the FASHION JACKPOT. And those pieces should be bought in every color. Or something.

So, what about you? Do you go for comfort or style? Do you sacrifice one for the other?

[CLOSET STAPLES] The Jean Jacket

One of the questions I get asked ALL the time by readers, friends, and heck even some of my family, is: “What are some of your closet staples?

And honestly, it wasn’t something that I’d thought all that consciously about. I had to first figure out what, to me, determines a “closet staple.” Because that may be different for different people.

BUT, I came up with a definition, at least for me.

CLOSET STAPLE (Noun): Any item or items in your wardrobe that can be worn MULTIPLE ways, that, when in doubt, you always reach for when you need that “trusty piece” to complete your look, and/or if you have owned the piece for many, many years and you continue to wear it year after year.

Okay, I know that definition isn’t going to be put in Webster’s dictionary anytime soon, but it works for now.

So, with that in mind, I thought it would be fun to put aside trends for a little bit and talk about closet staples! Because, why not? Err’body loves a good closet staple.

First up? The JEAN JACKET.

If you’ve read this blog for any amount of time, you know I love my jean jacket. I wear it ALL THE TIME.

I have had this particular jean jacket from the LOFT since my sophomore year of college. I’ve been wearing this thing for NINE years. And I still love it.

These are just SOME of the ways I’ve worn this jacket. You can view all these looks on my outfits page.still being molly - closet staples: the jean jacket

I even wore this jacket for some of the portraits (and to enter the reception) on my WEDDING day!

And, of course, I love jean jackets so much, I made my bridesmaids wear them, too!

And then, just because I can’t leave it out, I also LOVE my white jean jacket. Such a great alternative when the blue jean jacket just won’t cut it (which is rare :) ).

If I’m being totally honest with you – I’m going to say that this is probably my new favorite outfit ever. I know it’s a little similar to an outfit I wore back in September, but for real. I love this outfit. It is so me. The layering, the lace, the pearls, the boots, the denim jacket – it screams ME.

It was one of those outfits that I felt like a rockstar in all day. I walked with a little bit of extra confidence.

EVERY woman needs that outfit. Shoot, every MAN needs that outfit. You know the one I’m referring to. The one that you literally put on, and immediately you feel like a superstar. Like you can conquer the world. Like nobody can hold you down. Oh no. You got to keep on moving.

Quick! Name that song!

I’m rambling. What’s gotten into me today? I don’t even know, yo.

What I DO know is I love this outfit. But I already said that.

Okay, no more rambling.

Happy Wednesday!

I know that a lot of my posts lately have been on the more “serious” side. Well, minus my embarrassing story. And my pet peeves. And the things you didn’t know about me. Okay, well not ALL my posts have been serious – but a lot of them. Well, more than I’m used to.

But #NaBloPoMo has really been fun for me – it’s been so therapeutic, in a sense. I used to write ALL the time. Like, write as in, really write, not just talking about my outfit.

And I’ve gone through the normal ebbs and flows over the years – and a lot of those ebbs and flows have been on this here blog.

Well, today’s #NaBloPoMo prompt was:

What change, big or small, would you like your blog to make in the world?

Man. That’s a loaded question.

This blog? This blog? Being a change in the world? Hardly.

But, I guess, what a lot of this goes back to is why I blog in the first place. And you can really read about a lot of that here and here.

And the more I think about it – the more I realize that I hope this blog serves as a tiny little microcosm of change that I WOULD like to see in the world.

I want my blog to:

  • Make people laugh. The greatest joy that I get is knowing I made someone laugh or brought a smile to someone’s face
  • Make people feel comfortable in their own skin.I know I’ve dealt with my own insecurities over the years and I’ve never truly felt comfortable in my own skin – but I’m working on it. And I’m working on showing the world that yes, contrary to popular belief, you can be a size 12 and wear a leather skirt and glitter flats. Yes, you can feel and be beautiful in trendy clothes.
  • Teach people to love and respect each other’s differences. We’re all different. Let’s just get that out there and accept it. Now. No, really. Accept it. We’re not all going to think the same way, act the same way, believe the same things, or heck, even like the same things. But, I think we can all agree that we were made to be beautiful and unique – and the moment we start embracing and being open and welcome to that fact, the happier we’ll all be. No, really. I think so.
  • Teach people that serving others and thinking of others as greater than yourself is FUN. No, really. It is. The more you start taking care of other people and the more you start loving other people more than you love yourself, the more that you will love yourself in the end. Trust me. It happens. And it’s awesome.
  • Teach people that you don’t have to take yourself too seriously. I don’t take myself seriously at all. Maybe sometimes, but hardly ever. Life is meant to be fun. So wear tie-die, wear glitter flats, and laugh till your stomach hurts. As much as you can.
  • Teach people that, if they’re willing, that there is a love and a hope and a worth in something so much bigger than anything they can even ask or imagine – it’s a worth that isn’t material – it’s even more than that. Yes, I am a fashion blogger who also happens to love Jesus. I know that’s not popular with everyone and that’s okay. I’m not here to change anyone’s mind or judge anyone for feeling or thinking differently. But I am here to tell you my own story. I mean, it’s my blog, right? And my story is one of triumph, one of love, and one of grace. A grace and love I’ve experienced that has totally wrecked me and COMPLETELY turned my life around. For the better. And if you want to know more about it, ask me. I could talk about it for days. Weeks. Months. Years. And whatnot.

Okay. So, do you have a blog? What change do YOU want YOUR blog to be in the world? Small OR large? If you don’t have a blog, what things do you currently do in your life, or do you WISH you did to “be the change?”

Happy Tuesday, y’all.
