The Leather Forecast

You guys, don’t worry, this skirt isn’t real leather. I’m not going to lie, when I was in Indianapolis earlier this month and stopped in the H&M across from my hotel, I saw this skirt and thought, “Heck no, techno, this skirt is going to look terrible on me.” A leather skirt is totally out of my style comfort zone.

And then I tried it on.

And I fell in faux leather lurve.

The high-waisted, full-skirt cut made me feel so lady-like, but the leather made me feel edgy. And there are honestly so many ways I want to wear it. I had like 25 outfit ideas pop in my head, and the fact that it was only $24, I was sold.

And for the ladies out there that are like me and may have what some call “larger hips” – go for the high-waisted, full skirt trend! High-waisted, full or a-line skirts draw the eye to the smallest part of your waist, thus drawing the eye away from the, uh, larger part of your hips, giving you that hourglass shape… in all the right ways!

I was nervous that husband wouldn’t like the leather skirt… but I was wrong. He loves it.

Husband: “Are you going to wear that skirt a lot this year?”
Me: “Well, I was planning on it.”
Husband: “Good.”

So there you have it.

The leather skirt: furry friend friendly, flattering, and husband approved. That’s a good leather forecast*.

Also, on a side note, we leave for Kenya tomorrow. WHOAMAN.

You guys, how many of you attempted my TITLE challenge? You know you did. Don’t lie. Husband and I just spent the last 10 minutes trying to say “Blue Back Button Blouse” three times fast. Can’t be done… Well, it can’t be done perfectly or without flaw.

You see? This is what we do when I can’t come up with a blog post title.

Onto other things. I love Fab’rik. I know, I talked about how awesome they are last week, but seriously. I love that boutique here in Chapel Hill. Last week when I was stalking their Facebook page, they announced their annual sale… and I of course had to “pop my head in” and I snagged this freaking awesome Blue Back Button Blouse for $20 doll hairs.

WOOP!

I liked the back buttons (which, by the way, I didn’t know at first were back buttons… when I tried it on I apparently had it on backwards...) so yeah. Amateur move.

What are you trying to say three times fast today?

Emily Maynard Inspired Fashion: Chambray, Jersey Knit, & Pearls

You guys, I, like many of you other females out there, LOVE watching The Bachelorette. I know. I know. I used to say it was my guilty pleasure… now I just say it’s my pleasure.

I just can’t look away.

But this season, one of the reasons I really couldn’t look away is because I seriously was in love with like 99.999999% of EVERYTHING Emily wore this season.

She would come on the TV and I’d yell, “OH MY GOLLY I LOVE THAT.” It was a regular occurrence. But, of course, most of what she was wearing was SUPER expensive and way out of my budget range.

HOWEVER, on the finale on Sunday, this Chambray + Red Maxi combo was the first outfit she wore – she was in it for MAYBE a total of two minutes, but the second I saw it I said: “OH MY GOLLY I LOVE THAT.”

AND I knew I could recreate it and put my own spin on it using what I already have in my closet!

I LOVED the relaxed look of the jersey maxi with the casual chambray – but I REALLY loved that she classed it up with a big ol’ strand of pearls. That’s a North Carolina girl for you!

So, here is my Emily Maynard inspired outfit!

I don’t own a jersey knit maxi dress like the one Emily was wearing in the photo, but I do own this chevron jersey knit Old Navy skirt (the one I got for $5!) – so I paired the closest thing I have with my trusty chambray, my old costume pearl necklace, and my favorite Rainbow flippy-floppies.

I felt casual, comfortable, and as Emily Maynard as I can get. Sans veneeers. And a Jef with one F. I think she has veneers. Otherwise she has DANG near-perfect teeth. Jef definitely has only one F in his name. I still maintain that he looks like Rick Astley.

I mean, come on. Jef’s never gonna give her up. Or let her down. He’s never gonna run around and desert her.

Seriously. LOOK. The similarities are uncanny. AM I RIGHT?!

Anyway. Are you a Bachelorette fan? Do you at least love the fashion? What about Jef with one F? No? Bueller? Rick Astley? Wanna be Rick Roll’d again?

You guys, first off. I am so excited. LIKE, SO EXCITED. Our wedding is being FEATURED on a wedding blog today! AHHHHH!!! One of my favorite wedding blogs, Heart Love Weddings, is featuring our wedding that was photographed by the inimitable Katelyn James – GO CHECK IT OUT! YAY!!! I love Alexandra’s blog and I love the way she tells love stories, so I can’t wait to see ours on there!! (Sorry y’all. can you tell I’m excited?! #YOLO!!!!)

Okay, now on to the business.

I LOVE the peplum trend, but I hate the word peplum. Am I the only one? Is that weird? I really hate the word peplum. OH and I also hate the word romper. I know, both totally irrational words to hate… but I do. Okay, maybe hate is a strong word… STRONGLY dislike the words peplum and romper.

I’m weird.

Anyway. Despite my weird dislike for the word, I LOVE the actual style of the peplum. It’s a gorgeous silhouette and looks so fun, feminine, flirty, and classic. Like, a pretty peplum top, dress, skirt… so classic. So Jackie O. I love it.

Well, when I saw this awesome peplum top in the Penelope Lane Clothing shop, I knew I needed to snatch it up!

Holly, the owner of Penelope Lane Clothing, is seriously awesome. When she approached me about being an affiliate for her shop and *dun dun dun* hosting a GIVEAWAY (below!) I jumped at the chance.

Not only are the clothes and accessories in her shop ADORABLE, she’s a small business owner. Now, a little about this top. I LOVE this top… but a couple points just so you’re aware:

The stripes are black and taupe (which I actually like better than just black and white)- the picture can be a little deceiving and it can look black and white… but it’s more of a taupe
The top comes with a black belt - I like the top with the black belt it comes with, but I had fun pairing mine with a neon pink belt
The top does run a little small. I am wearing a size Large… I am usually a size medium in tops (I run anywhere from a size 8-12 depending on the brand…) BUT it was more a LITTLE small for me in the arms and in the length – there is still room in the chest area. *le sigh* So, if you have a larger chest, don’t feel nervous about it – there’s still plenty o’ room.
I have an unusually long torso, so I have to wear a tank underneath, but it doesn’t bother me at all. I actually like it
Be prepared to get a TON of compliments. So I actually wore this to church last weekend when I was leading worship… and I easily had 10-15 people come up to me and say how much they loved the top and asked me where I got it from.
