Pattern Mixing: Stripes! Stripes!

You guys can relax, I didn’t wake up blind this morning – I meant to dress like this. It’s trendy, y’all. In fact, SO trendy that it’s Marion’s TREND OF THE MONTH Challenge at Marionberry Style.

It’s funny because sometimes I feel like the “blogger” world and the “real world” are in two different fashion places at once.

For example, I feel like everyone and their second-cousin-once-removed has a bubble necklace and knows where to get a cheap version.

But then I realize that 90% of my friends and family that read my blog aren’t reading a ton of fashion and style blogs every day and are inundated with bubble necklaces.

Oh, and for my friends and family who read this blog and don’t know where to get a cheap bubble necklace, you can find them here: these are all $12 with free shipping.

But I digress.

Today’s Topic at Hand: PATTERN MIXING. Well, more specifically, stripe mixing.

I haven’t always been the biggest proponent of pattern mixing. I tried it once, and I liked it alright… but I haven’t done much of it since.

Well, I guess I’ve been more weary of it, but then I realized, #YOLO, and so, I tried mixing patterns today. Plus, I’m always up for a challenge.

Here’s what I’ve learned about pattern mixing:

1. Be confident. Above all, no matter WHAT you’re wearing or what patterns you’re mixing, be confident. Confidence will make ANYONE want to wear what you’re wearing… or at least will make anyone think what you’re wearing looks awesome.

(Remember this, Mean Girls fans?)
2. Stick to similar / like colors. Although I’m no expert at pattern mixing, I do know that like colors go well together. So, in my look, I paired the blue, white, and orange striped skirt with a blue and white striped blazer. Different stripes, yes. Similar colors, yes. Matchy matchy, no.

3. Include a complimentary “Confidence Piece”. Okay, this goes back to #1… but by wearing or including a complimentary confidence piece in the whole look, you’ll instantly feel better about mixing those patterns! What do I mean by complimentary confidence piece? I mean that necklace you LOVE or those shoes you ADORE – that COMPLIMENTS the outfit. We all have those pieces in our closet that make us feel awesome… so, pick one of those pieces that goes with the outfit. For example, my confidence piece(s) in this look are my wedges and my bubble necklace. I LOVE these wedges and I LOVE my bubble necklaces… so I instantly felt better rocking them.

4. Include a “take away” piece. So, pattern mixing might not be “all the rage” in your office. Or maybe you’re going to be in a big meeting or attending an event and “trends” aren’t the norm. WELL, including a take away piece can make the outfit more versatile. For me? My take away piece was my blazer. I can throw on the blazer when I’m out or feeling snazzy, but if I’m at work or in a meeting and I don’t want to be as daring, I can take the blazer off and I still have an appropriate outfit on underneath. Maybe your take away piece is a scarf, or a belt, or something like that. Or maybe it’s a “put on” piece.

SO, what do YOU think? Are you a fan of the pattern mixing? Have you tried it? What tips would YOU suggest to someone who’s new to pattern mixing?

Oh, and the BEST quote I’ve read this year:

“2012 is going to be the year of the fashion trends we all look back on 10 years from now and say, “WE WORE THAT?!”

Get the look, yo!

(can you tell I shop at Target a lot?)

You guys, happy Saturday! I hope you are enjoying your weekend. I am in Virginia Beach for my lil’s bridal shower and bachelorette party… so ima keep this one short.

I love spicing up a pair of chino shorts with some sequins. Seriously. I love sequins. SO MUCH FUN. I always feel so fancy in sequins.

I really think it’s impossible to be sad in sequins.

I’m just saying.

navy striped blazer and kelly green chinosYou guys, don’t worry, you’re not dreaming. It’s not fall. It has, however, finally cooled down a LITTLE bit here in North Carolina. As in, it’s in the 80s and 90s and not the 100s. Well, one day this week it was even, dare I say, chilly in the morning when I went to work.

Honestly, it was like in the 70s… and our office is chilly from the AC, so I threw this awesome striped blazer on over a sleeveless shirt so I could transition from AC to heat. If you will.

Also, it’s funny because I ALMOST got rid of these green chinos. When I bought them five years ago, colored pants were apparently not cool and so I would get people making comments to me all the time like, ‘Oh, I didn’t know it was St. Patrick’s Day‘ or ‘Wow, those sure are greeeen.’

Well, luckily I didn’t get rid of them, and now, color is in! HUZZAH! Also, I like the feel of the wide flare vs. the skinny pant. I wear skinny jeans a lot, but the wide flare is a nice break from the skinny.

ANYWAY. I am rambling. What do you wear when it’s hot outside but cold inside? Do you have a pair of pants that used to be “not cool” but are totally in style now?

Okay, now on to your weekly round up. This is for those of you that may have missed a post or two :)

Have an awesome weekend, y’all!

all for now.

My Attempt at Fashion: The Bottom Dilemma

You guys. I’d be lying to you if I said I haven’t been wanting a navy blue and white striped blazer for a while. It’s just one of those pieces I’ve wanted in my closet for what feels like a long, long time. Not sure why, I just have. However, I’ve never wanted to cough up the cash for one. I just don’t buy new clothes very often.

Like, rarely. If ever.

I’m trying to build a little money here or there in MY personal cash budget* to start getting some new stuff because A LOT of what I own is outdated. Now, I can’t do this a lot because when you’re married and you share a budget and finances – you have to think totally about the other person and I don’t want to spend all our money on clothing.

*SIDE NOTE ABOUT THE CASH BUDGET: one thing that has been awesome is hubs and I have built in to our joint budget is a small amount of cash for each of us. Those “John Cash” and “Molly Cash” lines in our budget are literally sums of cash we get to spend however we want during that month. No questions asked. That way, if hubs wants to go to Home Depot and get a new saw or something for the front yard, he can. If I want to go to Marshall’s and spend money on a new blazer, I can. Obviously there are exceptions, but sticking to that system has been good. We’re a couple months into this thing and that’s working out well for us.

Anywho.

Back on track.

But also, this whole “blogging what I’m wearing” thing has been a lot of fun because it has begun to force me to look at the pieces I DO have in my closet and resurrect them, if you will.

You know, think outside the box and gather inspiration from around the web and people I see on the street and see if I can be inspired by that style with things I already have. Now, I don’t mean copy their style – but be inspired to take that style and make it my own.

With ALL that being said… I went to Marshall’s last week and found this AWESOME striped blazer for $19. WOOHOO! Fit perfectly in my cash budget. WIN.

Now, the Dilemma I referenced in the title of this post is WHAT TO WEAR ON BOTTOM. I was seriously struggling. I couldn’t decide what bottom I wanted to wear with the blazer.

Here were my choices:

Outfit Deets (left to right):

  • Striped Blazer – Marshall’s ($19) – now, I couldn’t find the EXACT one online, but here’s one that’s close enough for government work from Gap
  • Blue Ruffle Shirt – Target ($6 on clearance – OLD)
  • Skirt – Banana Republic – (OLD)
  • Shoes – Rack Room Shoes (OLD)
  • Pink Skirt – Lilly Pulitzer (OLD)
  • Steve Madden Sandals (OLD – got them at DSW)
  • Necklaces – The Yellow one is Kazuri beads (got them when I was on my mission trip in Kenya) – the teal one I have no idea

Here’s what I ended up wearing:

Okay, what do you think? Are these good prospects? What would you have worn it with? Do they all work? Do some not work? I want to hear feedback cause, you know, I’m just trying to figure this thing out. That’s why it’s called an ATTEMPT at fashion. :)

xoxo, All for now.
